“Foster Care.” The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, 6th ed. 2007. Columbia University Press. http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/society/A0819327.html
This article was informative of the basics of understanding foster care. It gives the main reasons why a child would be put in foster care such as crime, alcoholism, ect. It also gives places where children would be put: institutions, foster parents homes, or group homes. Also how in some cases they can be put up for adoption. I think it is a good basis to get started. I will definately use this in my paper for it gives me useful and creditable information.

This section on the Mile High United Way Website provides everything you would need to know about their program. It provides history and credentials of all the things they have done and do. It also maps out how they plan on making a difference through three areas: school readiness, youth success, and adult self sufficiency. It also tells the step to how they go about it: to invest, to convene, and to innovate. They also mention that they provide success stories of people who have gone through their program and videos. This is a big foster care program and can provide my paper with proof of all the things they do for the children as well as all the opportunities they get.
Book:
Pecora, Peter J. What works in foster care? : key components of success from the Northwest Foster Care Alumni Study. Oxford, New York. Oxford University Press. 2010.
This book looks at different foster care agencies and studies their past research, data, and backgrounds. It looks at all different factors of these agencies such as risk factors, education, experiences and outcomes of foster kids, and health. I think this will be a harder book to read but will give me some statistics to put into my paper. But I don’t think it will be a main source.
Periodical Article:
Ashby, Cornelia M. Child welfare [electronic resource] : HHS actions would help states prepare youth in the foster care system for independent living : testimony before the Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support, Committee on Ways and Means, U.S. House of Representatives. Washington, D.C.: U.S. Govt. Accountability Office. 2007. http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgibin/getdoc.cgi?dbname=gao&docid=f:d071097t.pdf
This article found in the Auraria Library talks about funding to foster cares independent living program. This is also referred to as CHAFEE program. It gives statistics on the program throughout the years. It includes history of the program. It also talks about the instances in which they would use this program as well as its flaws and ways to improve it. This is also important to my paper for it will oppose one of the arguements against foster care which is that the foster care system abandons the kids after they age out.

I think you have a lot of bases covered as far as why children are put into foster care and the types of programs that are currently being run. I would possibly look into local foster care agencies and see their policies as far as adoption and who could or could not qualify, and possibly justify their reasonings behind it. Otherwise, it looks as if you have a ton of ideas flowing, which is great!
ReplyDeleteI liked your book erview becasue I completely agree with you about the book review. Books are a great source for information but very hard for some topics but it will give you good statistics and information needed for the paper. It was also good that you found an article that opposes your stance it makes for a good topic in an argumentative paper.
ReplyDeleteI think the Mile High United website evaluation was awesome because it's a website from a local foster care. You can also viste u Milege High United way and use it as field research.
